Frode Hegland

Frode Hegland is a Norwegian philosopher living and working in London. His philosophy of 'liquid information' led to the formation of The Hyperwords Company, now the Liquid Information Company, where he works to make online textual environments more liquid, in line with Doug Engelbart's goal of augmenting knowledge workers and Ted Nelsons goal of making text and connections more interactive and visual.

His interest in all this started when he was at Syracuse University in 1991 and the Mac vs. PC wars were at their worst. He was (and still is) a Mac guy. But he realized they were both not optimal for knowledge work. So he spent a year or so developing a philosohpy and wrote a Manifesto for what he felt would be a better way. He read Howard Rheingold's Tools for Thought and as a consequence, later met and started working with Doug Engelbart, whom he made a documentary on The Invisible Revolution, and who has inspired all of his work.

He previously designed the Liquid Information email & usenet newsgroup system and designed and produced LiSA, the Liquid Information Speaking Assistant for Mac and Windows in 2000 (now revived and available from the MacOS X App Store).

Frode produced a documentary on Doug Engelbart, available to view on the web or as video Podcasts at Invisiblerevolution.net.

Frode graduated from Syracuse University in New York, with an advertising degree. Masters in Human Computer Interaction from University College London Interaction Center.

He is working on a book, The Liquid Information Philosophy, which will be available in digital formats late 2011.
